Position Overview

This is an Independent Subcontractor (1099) position serving the Houston area. Investigators work on a flexible, case-by-case basis, with assignments available during weekdays, evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call as operational needs require. Compensation is competitive and determined by the type of investigation, case complexity, travel requirements, experience, and overall performance. Additional compensation opportunities may be available for specialized investigations, extended surveillance assignments, and other qualifying case work.

Required Qualifications, Experience & Licensing

  • Minimum of 2 years of professional private investigation experience
  • Active Texas Private Investigator License (current and in good standing)
  • Demonstrated experience conducting mobile and stationary surveillance
  • Strong case documentation and investigative report writing skills
  • Excellent observational, communication, and decision-making abilities
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with case managers
  • Valid Texas driver’s license with a clean driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check and maintain confidentiality at all times

Equipment Requirements

  • iPad or tablet for case management, reporting, and accessing assignments
  • Modern smartphone with reliable voice and data service
  • Personal vehicle in good mechanical condition suitable for surveillance operations
  • Legal window tint (within applicable state laws)
  • Vehicle charger and backup battery pack for mobile operations
  • Professional camcorder with low-light or night vision capability
  • DSLR or mirrorless camera with a telephoto lens
  • Binoculars (8x–10x magnification)
  • Laptop computer for report preparation and evidence management
  • Portable Wi-Fi hotspot for field connectivity
  • Dash camera for documenting field activity when appropriate
  • External hard drive or secure cloud storage for evidence backup

Core Responsibilities

  • Conduct professional surveillance operations, including mobile, stationary, and foot surveillance
  • Capture high-quality photographic and video evidence that accurately documents investigative findings
  • Maintain detailed surveillance logs with precise timestamps, observations, and activity summaries
  • Prepare clear, comprehensive, and court-admissible investigative reports
  • Conduct background investigations, public records research, and database searches
  • Locate, interview, and obtain statements from witnesses and other relevant individuals when assigned
  • Communicate timely case updates with case managers and leadership throughout the investigation
  • Safeguard confidential client information and maintain the highest level of discretion and professionalism
  • Operate in compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, including Texas Private Security regulations
  • Follow company investigative procedures, safety protocols, and evidence-handling standards
  • Maintain investigative equipment in good working condition and ensure evidence is securely preserved
  • Represent Terrance Private Investigator & Associates professionally during all client and field interactions

  • Proficient in operating surveillance equipment, including cameras, camcorders, video recording devices, and GPS technology

  • Experience conducting database research, public records searches, and skip tracing
  • Proficient with iPads, smartphones, case management software, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, and other investigative technology
  • Ability to manage digital evidence, photographs, videos, and case files securely

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to conduct extended surveillance assignments, including remaining stationary for prolonged periods
  • Ability to safely operate surveillance and investigative equipment
  • Ability to work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions
  • Ability to drive for extended periods during mobile surveillance operations
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and reliable transportation
  • Ability to occasionally lift and carry investigative equipment weighing up to 30 pounds

Rates are discussed during the interview process and are determined by experience, qualifications, travel requirements, and the specific demands of each assignment. Additional compensation or equipment allowances may be available for specialized investigations requiring advanced equipment or extended surveillance.

All subcontractors are expected to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and legal compliance while representing Terrance Private Investigator & Associates. Investigators must comply with all applicable Texas Private Security licensing requirements, company safety policies, surveillance laws, confidentiality and data security protocols, and our professional code of ethics. During active investigations, investigators are required to maintain regular communication with case management, immediately report safety concerns or significant developments, and conduct every assignment with integrity, discretion, and respect for all applicable laws.
